Root Canals

What is a root canal?

A root canal is performed when the tooth become infected or badly damaged. During the procedure the pulp (the nerves and blood vessels in the tooth) is removed and the inside of the tooth is cleaned and sealed.

What to expect during a root canal?

If your dentist suspects that you may need a root canal the first step is often to take X-rays or review existing X-rays to locate the decay or damage.  Your dentist will then use local anesthesia to numb the area around the tooth. To keep the area clean and dry a rubber dam is placed around the tooth.
